Paul started his musical training in the Calgary Boys Choir where he spent his adolescent years developing his voice and stage comfort. Then in High School played Alto Saxophone in the school band and in Grade 12 formed a Jazz Band and played in the School Cafeteria at lunch time twice a week. He got his musical aptitude from his Father Denis who played drums in a band all through high school for any event in the small town of Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland.
He got an acoustic guitar for Christmas in 1992 and taught himself how to play and would play and sing along at all the family gatherings. He met Glen Birch at work and a friendship was formed that stands the test of time to this day. He joined the cover band the C-FURY’S in 1993 and played the Calgary Bars for several years.
He didn’t play formally in a band for many years but jumped in and played with his Brother and his friends on the odd occasion just to keep his skills sharp. All the while the friendship with Glen was still strong. Glen one day, about 5 years ago, asked Paul to come out and jam with him and Drummer Tom McDonald for fun and the chemistry was great. We played together as a trio until the addition of Rhythm Guitarist Gil Donkergoed joined and the 4 piece band Backhand Echo was born.
